COMMENTS: The Brownell 26 are recognizable for their attractive, flared, hard chine, high freeboard, hull shape and aft mounted tiller and secondary throttle controls. They were designed for pursuing striped bass in the tidal rips and notoriously choppy waters of Buzzards Bay and have proven themselves to be exceptionally seaworthy, stable and comfortable. They are, as many fiberglass imitations have shown, ideal boats not just for the sportfishing guides for whom they were originally conceived, but also as a family day boats for casual fishing, island hopping and overnighting.
SPIRIT II is one of just 18 of the larger 26' Brownell models, designed by Eldredge-McInnis firm and built in 1970 by Fred Brownell in his Mattapoisett, MA shop using an early form of cold molded construction. She is powered by a 300 hp 5.7L V8 Crusader gas engine with under 200 hours on the clock. She cruised efficiently at 13-14 knots burning just 4.5 gph, and tops out at just over 20 knots. She has a nicely appointed sitting headroom interior and comes well equipped with a basic 12V electrical system, Garmin GPS, custom bimini and side curtains, vee berth and engine box cushions, a head nicely concealed under the port settee.
SPIRIT II is in excellent condition following significant restoration work performed by David Knott of Inshore Boat Shop in Marion, MA in 2012, and a full aesthetic overhaul last winter at Hylan and Brown in Brooklin, ME. Though it's a 60 years old design, the ample cockpit space, practical cuddy cabin and exceptional handling characteristics of the Brownell/Eldredge-McInnis bass boats makes them an excellent choice for a classic New England fishing/day boat. A practical, comfortable and stylish alternative to today's ubiquitous fiberglass center console.
